Africa Energy Access Internship

GreenMax Capital Advisors is soliciting applications for our Fall 2019 Internship Program located in our Brooklyn, New York office, to support launch of the Green 4 Access (G4A) First Loss Facility, a fund intended to support the financing of off-grid solar projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

GreenMax is one of the leading international policy and financial advisory firms focused entirely on the clean energy sector. We advise governments, international financial institutions, investors and project developers on strategies to increase implementation of renewable energy and energy efficiency in emerging markets worldwide. We have completed assignments in more than 80 countries across Africa, Europe, Latin America-Caribbean, MENA and Asia-Pacific.

As part of our Fall internship program this year, we are seeking a candidate who will be dedicated to supporting the launch of the G4A initiative. G4A is a new start-up venture established through a partnership between GreenMax Capital Group and the non-profit organization, Energy 4 Impact, that seeks to increase access to clean and affordable energy (SDG7) by developing accessible First Loss Facilities to shield lenders and investors from a portion of off-grid energy sector risks. Through the analysis of portfolio risks and default rates and by partnering with major DFIs and social impact investors, G4A will manage First Loss Facilities that support international and local lenders as the beneficiaries/clients. The goal is to catalyze additional lending and investment activity in the African off-grid energy sector.

Under the guidance of senior management, the candidate will support the preparation phase of the start-up fund through a range of mainly quantitative tasks, including (but not limited to) the following:

(i) Research and analysis of existing credit data in the off-grid energy sector, including data from off-grid solar sector studies from the World Bank, IFC, Lighting Global, Global Off-Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA), Africa Low Emission Development Strategies (LEDS) Program, African Mini-Grid Developers Association (AMDA), UNDP mini-grid studies etc.;
(ii) The aggregation and analysis of original credit and default data in the Sub-Saharan African off-grid energy sector from GreenMax’s direct engagement with international and local lenders (with first contacts in Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania);
(iii) The formulation of gathered credit data into useable spreadsheets, as well as meaningful charts and graphs for presentation purposes;
(iv) Possible assistance on the creation of an Excel-based fund model for G4A

For this assignment, we are specifically seeking a candidate with excellent written proficiency in English. Candidates should also have excellent analytic and Excel skills, a good understanding of basic debt finance structures, and a strong interest in renewable energy finance in the Sub-Saharan African context. Previous academic or professional work experience involving econometrics, credit analysis and statistics would be desirable. We encourage current students or recent graduates from university programs in sustainable development, renewable energy, energy and environmental policy, business and finance to apply.

Please submit a cover letter, your CV and a brief writing sample (e.g. an article or the executive summary of a research report) to alabua@greenmaxcap.com for consideration. Interviews will be scheduled on a rolling basis in person or by phone/via Skype, with the internship expected to commence in early September and extend into early December 2019 (exact dates are flexible but a minimum of 12 weeks engagement is required). The deadline for applications is Friday August 30, 2019.
No phone calls or recruiters please.
