Garaio Gafiye has nearly 40 years of experience as a renewable energy expert in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific region. For the majority of his career, Garaio has worked on behalf of rural communities in Papua New Guinea. As Energy Programme Manager at the Appropriate Technology and Community Development Institute of the PNG University of Technology, he led the assessment, design, procurement, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of several small-scale renewable energy systems, including solar and hydropower systems.
As a consultant at GreenMax, Garaio supported two assignments for UNDP in Papua New Guinea, including the development of a national energy efficiency roadmap and preparation of an off-grid code for small power systems (in partnership with Trama TecnoAmbiental). He previously carried out consulting assignments in PNG for a number of development organizations, including the World Bank, GIZ and Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).
Garaio holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from PNG University of Technology and is a registered engineer at the Institute of Engineers PNG.
