GreenMax Turns 30: Reflecting on Our Journey
In 2024, GreenMax celebrates its 30th anniversary. Two years ago, I joined GreenMax to lead our expansion into energy fund management, an exciting new addition to our established consulting and advisory services. My role primarily focuses on the strategic design and implementation of the Results-Based Financing (RBF) component of CEI Africa. Launched by KfW on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in 2021, this program provides catalytic capital for energy access projects, including mini-grids, standalone solar systems, and productive use technologies.
As of now, the fund manages EUR 54 million in assets (with fundraising ongoing) and has committed over EUR 16.5 million in RBF, Technical Assistance (TA), and Forgivable Loans to mini-grid projects in Kenya, DRC, Mali, and Benin. Partnering with Triple Jump & Persistent, we’ve developed co-financing and market development collaborations with leading European crowd lenders, other private fund managers, donors, African governments, and energy regulators. This positions us for an exciting future. [To see more on our progress: Click Here].
Reflecting on GreenMax’s 30th birthday, several factors stand out as crucial to our success. While this list is not exhaustive, it highlights key elements of our dynamic culture:
Amazing People
Our success starts with our people. When I joined, I was struck by the diverse backgrounds of our team members, including expertise in engineering, project development, program management, banking, and consulting. Their wisdom and guidance have been invaluable across various projects. More importantly, they are wonderful human beings who make work enjoyable. For instance, one colleague, Robert, can run 100 miles over a weekend and still come to work on Monday in better shape than the rest of us—a testament to his remarkable recovery abilities!
“Day One” Thinking
GreenMax thrives on an entrepreneurial spirit, always acting as if it’s day one. We continually brainstorm new ideas, design innovative fund models, and improve existing products and processes. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, quite unlike the routine of a traditional 30-year-old business.
A Culture of Collaboration
At GreenMax, teamwork is essential. Our flat organizational structure encourages input from everyone. With offices in New York, Nairobi, Lagos, and Lomé, we leverage technology to enhance collaboration and efficiency. Our leadership prioritizes execution, keeping us solutions-oriented and focused on achieving results.
While this summary captures many of our strengths, it’s important to acknowledge that not everything is always smooth sailing. Even top teams face challenges. For now, let’s celebrate our victories and save the discussion of our challenges and lessons learned for another time.
In conclusion, as the saying goes, “age is nothing but a number.” Our 30th anniversary is not a mark of “arrival” but a testament to what’s possible and a commitment to achieving even more. We remain open to partnering with like-minded organizations to drive lasting impact. Here’s to the next 30 years!
