POSITION OVERVIEW
The Senior Clean Energy Transaction Advisor will be a full-time position based in one of GreenMax’s office locations in Africa – Nairobi, Kenya; Lagos, Nigeria; Lomé, Togo; Kinshasa, DRC or Bangui, CAR. The Advisor will be responsible for advising, structuring, and executing transactions related to off-grid clean energy projects and businesses. The advisor will work closely with stakeholders, including private clean energy companies, financiers, and government agencies, to ensure the successful financing of clean energy solutions.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Clean Energy Transaction Advisor will be primarily assigned to the Transaction Advisory Group and will be responsible for supporting the Group’s business activities. The Clean Energy Transaction Advisor may also be assigned to support financing platforms managed by GreenMax and work on other assignments. Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Business Development: Identifying, engaging and evaluating potential clients
- Investment Readiness: Providing investment readiness support to off-grid energy companies including strategy management, financial management, credit risk management, operational management and business analytics. In addition, supporting clients in preparation of financing solicitation documents (teaser, pitch deck and other relevant supporting documents) to be distributed to potential financiers and coach/mentor companies on investor interaction/engagement and managing deal rooms
- Strategic Advisory Services: Providing strategic advisory services to clients on off-grid energy ventures, including market entry strategies, market positioning, regulatory navigation, sales strategy, business planning, strategic partnerships, market expansion, gender strategy etc.
- Financial Management: Providing guidance to clients in strengthening their financial management framework, encompassing bookkeeping, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls and cash flow management
- Risk Management: Identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with off-grid energy transactions, including financial, operational, and regulatory risks. Recommending credit risk mitigation strategies and developing credit risk policy
- Operational Management: Providing guidance to clients on improving operational efficiency, supply chain, internal tools and processes, and providing capacity building/training on key business areas
- Transaction Structuring: Lead the structuring of off-grid energy transactions, including financial modeling, determination of financing needs, valuation, developing financing strategies/plans including recommendation on optimal financing structure (including debt, equity, grants, and concessional financing structures) and exit strategies, and restructuring prior financing
- Investor Outreach: Providing investment facilitation support to clients covering investor/financier identification, financier outreach, arranging meetings, and leading engagement with potential funding partners
- Transaction Advisory: Providing transaction advisory support to clients covering reviewing term sheets, negotiating the proposed terms, responding to investor queries, coordinating the due diligence process, and leading the negotiation of financing agreements up until financial close is achieved
- Stakeholder Engagement: Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including developers, investors, multilateral institutions, NGOs, and government agencies to facilitate project success
- Market Analysis: Conducting thorough market analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and risks in the clean energy sector, with a focus on emerging markets
- Client Relationship Management: Acting as the main point of contact for clients, ensuring their needs are met and providing high-quality advisory services throughout the transaction process.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Engineering, International Development, or a related field. An MBA or relevant Master’s degree is preferred
- Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in project finance, investment, management or advisory roles within the clean energy sector, with a focus on off-grid or decentralized energy solutions
- Skills:
- Expertise in financial modeling, particularly for off-grid and decentralized energy projects
- Strong understanding of renewable energy technologies, especially those applicable in off-grid contexts
- Experience in sub-Saharan Africa and understanding of local regulatory and financial environments
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic environment
- Proficiency in project/corporate finance and transaction structuring tools
- Language: Excellent spoken and written English communication skills required; French language proficiency required
- Certifications: Relevant certifications in finance, energy, or international development are a plus (e.g., CPA, ACCA, CFA, PMP, etc.)
- Cultural Competence: Ability to work effectively in diverse cultural contexts, particularly in developing countries. Willingness to travel to meet with clients/investors in sub-Saharan Africa.
