UNIDO East Africa Geothermal Direct Use Market Assessment

Client:

Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN)

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

Country:

Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda

Year:

2019–2021

Description:

In 2019, GreenMax was retained by the CTCN/UNIDO to provide specialized technical assistance services to identify potential geothermal direct use opportunities in six East African countries – Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The GreenMax team established the economic and market viability of identified direct use geothermal technologies in each country, which covered a wide range of productive use applications, including drying of agricultural produce such as fruits, vegetables, fish and grains, as well as heating applications to support agricultural production and processing, including heating for greenhouses, fish farms, milk pasteurization and chicken hatcheries, among others.

Members of the GreenMax field research team meet with representatives of the Busokelo District Council in the Mbeya Region of Tanzania to assess potential direct use geothermal technologies that may be viable for local communities adjacent to the Kiejo-Mbaka Geothermal site currently being developed by the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC). The GreenMax team’s study found that vegetable, grain and fish drying were among the most suitable direct use applications for further consideration.
